What we know — and what we don't

A heritage account citing contemporary newspaper reports says a boy named Owens noticed part of Barmouth Bridge on fire while crossing it, ran to the tollgate and raised the alarm. The fire was extinguished and he was reportedly recommended to the Cambrian Railways Board for a reward.

What remains uncertain: we have not yet established Owens's full name, age or the amount of any reward from a primary newspaper issue. The surviving account should be read with that uncertainty in mind.
